Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Hiroshima and Nagasaki are the events that caused VJ day, which was the day that marked the United States the official winners of the war against Japan.
- Harry S. Truman was the president that made the final decision for two atomic bombs to be dropped on two civilian filled Japanese cities.
- Hiroshima was on August 6th, 1945 and Nagasaki was August 9th.
- Hiroshima had 100,000 instant civilian deaths.
- On August 8th, the Soviets agree to join the United States against Japan (convenient timing)
- On the 9th, over 70,000 were killed in Nagasaki.
- The instant effects were horrible; however, it was the radiation that has had the longest lasting effect on the Japanese population.
- After these two attacks, the emperor speaks to the Japanese people and asks them to surrender. This was unthinkable to many Japanese as they were told to fight till the death.
- On August 15th, the Japanese surrender and VJ day occurs.
- The Sahkalin island were occupied by the Soviets till the 30th of August.
